Last week, the Danish energy company Ørsted and Dominion Energy finalized the installation of the first turbine foundations in US federal waters, commencing the transition to renewable offshore wind energy in the US. The installations serve as a symbol for the what the future of the offshore wind industry holds for the U.S.

A Monumental Day

In January 2020 it was announced that the first offshore wind energy project on a federal lease was to start in May 2020 and last week Danish energy company Ørsted and Dominion Energy finalized the installation of the first turbine foundations and it was a true monumental day for the U.S. offshore wind industry. As a first-mover in offshore wind energy, Denmark commissioned its first offshore wind farm in 1991 nd today, the sector contains both technologies and services aimed at all phases of an offshore wind energy project, which creates a growing interest in the US for Danish solutions throughout the supply chain.

Market Forecast

According to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), the United States has a vast offshore wind energy resource with a technical potential of more than 2,000 gigawatts (GW) – or nearly double the US’s current electricity use.

Additionally, the U.S. has a total offshore wind pipeline of over 26,000 megawatts (MW) spanning 10 states of the East and Great Lakes coasts. By itself, the State of New York has dedicated itself to 9,000 MW of offshore wind energy by 2035 – enough electricity to power up to 6 million homes. In comparison, European States have within the last 25 years installed a collective sum of 22,072 MW offshore wind, indicating the vast market potential.

New Market Opportunities

Harnessing America’s offshore wind resources presents an enormous opportunity to create tens of thousands of highly-skilled jobs, revitalize coastal communities, and deliver large amounts of clean, reliable energy to the US’s biggest population centers.

“Today is a monumental day for the U.S. offshore wind industry as Ørsted completed the installation of the first turbine foundations in U.S. federal waters.” Thomas Brostrøm, President at Ørsted North America wrote on Twitter on May 27, 2020. “I hope today serves as a symbol for what the future of this industry holds for the U.S.”

As offshore wind energy is gaining traction in the US, the interest and demand for offshore wind technology will increase, making the US and in particular New York State a growing market for energy companies and offshore wind supply chain companies.
