Rebuilding New York’s Schools through Partnerships
The Reopen and Rebuild America’s Schools Act of 2021 invests $130 billion to help reopen public schools and provide students and educators a safe place to learn and work and creates common starting point to discuss best practice and what is needed to succeed in implementing the best possible solutions – to rebuild New York’s schools for the future.
In educational settings and open spaces, a good indoor climate is essential to health and well-being, but it also plays a crucial role in student achievement. Creating the optimal conditions for learning requires product solutions designed to address all the unique needs of education spaces. Optimal acoustics, air quality, natural lighting and aesthetics work together to impact how students understand teachers, stay focused and even perform on tests.
To rebuild New York’s schools for the future we must look for new inspiration that can help provide both students and educators with a safe place to grow and work. This session is an insight into best practices, and what we need to do to succeed with implementation – which is critical to secure the future of New York’s schools and all who uses them.
Speakers
On September 30, during BuildingEnergy NYC, leading experts will discuss how New York’s schools can be built back better. Join us for an inspiration discussion and meet leading pioneers in the field:
- Annie Bevan, Executive Director, mindful MATERIALS
- Rodolfo Perez, Senior Director, The International WELL Building Institute

Why We Must Build Back Circular
We must take innovative measures to source ideas for how we build back circular to explore and develop a future model. Therefore, this session will also bring into focus how we can work faster and smarter to bolster the circular economy thinking in buildings.
Adopting circular economy approaches in high growth, high-waste sector like the built environment presents a tremendous opportunity for businesses, governments, and cities to minimize structural waste and thus realize greater value from built environment assets. It is time to reshape our urban future and move from principles to practices. During the session, visionary practitioners will provide their perspectives on partnerships as key to understanding and solving tomorrow’s challenges.
Learning objectives
- Design sits prominently at the heart of the circular economy. It requires us to redesign everything: products, business models, cities, and the linear systems that have lasted for the past centuries. During the session, you will gain insight into six strategies for incorporating circular principles into your business.
- The greatest opportunities are realized when the circular economy is applied to strategic decision-making – varying from design to selection of products. Innovative projects and cases will be presented.
- To accelerate the circular economy in the built environment, partnerships are key and may come in many forms and shapes. Through the Build Back Circular challenge, Barnard College enters into new partnerships to reach its goal of becoming a circular campus.
Speakers
- Tom Kennedy, Principal, Arup
- Kåre Stokholm Poulsgaard, Head of Innovation, 3XN/GXN
- Oliver Neve, Associate, Ramboll
- Sandra Goldmark, Director of Sustainability and Climate Action, Barnard College
Program

Build Back Greener – Green Recovery Strategies for the Building Sector
As part of US Climate Action Week 2021, ROCKWOOL International and Danish Cleantech Hub is opening the virtual doors for the event ‘Build Back Greener – Green Recovery Strategies for the Building Sector’.
The buildings and construction sector is highly energy-demanding and carbon-intensive, accounting for 39 percent of global energy-related CO2 emissions and it must be emphasized, that it already makes business sense to build green. Green buildings have a lower operational cost than traditional ones and their asset value is around 10% higher. Yet, to fully decarbonize the built environment as a system, we need to make sure that all players along the value chain collaborate and focus on the reduction of emissions and creating green jobs and economic growth.
The climate change movement in the built environment has gained serious momentum in recent years. Spearheaded by government and the private sector, more and more stakeholders are signing up to set and help meet energy and climate targets across the buildings sector. The construction sector can pave the way for a green economic recovery and provide the boost we need to jump-start the economy in the aftermath of COVID-19.
During the event and with the Leader’s Summit on Climate as the backdrop, American and Danish experts across the building sector will discuss best in class recovery strategies on how to leverage building retrofits and public-private partnerships to support economic development and innovation while creating green jobs, focusing on the ambitious goals already set by New York State and New York City.

The overall challenge question is:
In the upcoming weeks you will have the opportunity to participate in the two workshops, where you will get to dive into the challenge, brainstorm ideas and discuss potential solutions with fellow minded peers. The aim of the co-creation workshops is for multi-sector groups to co-develop several potential feasible solution ideas to the city challenge, to be later pitched to a panel of senior city stakeholders.
REGISTER for the two workshops to learn about the challenges in more detail and what the process and key dates of activities for you to get involved in.
Key Dates
Workshop 1 ‘Ideation, Brainstorming and Prioritization’: Wednesday 14th April 15:00-17:00 CET (09:00-11:00 EDT)
The first workshop will focus on detailed presentations from both NYC and CPH on the challenges and will allow the participants to have the first focused Q&As. The participating companies will then get 2-3 minutes to pitch their company/technology to the other participants. Following this, the companies will be encouraged to match-up and invited onto the online digital platform space. Here, the companies will work in groups and brainstorm initial solution ideas in breakout rooms. The goal isn’t a perfect idea, it’s lots of ideas, collaboration, and openness to wild solutions. The only way to get to good ideas is to have lots to choose from.
Workshop 2 ‘Developing one idea for the pitch session’: Wednesday 28th April 15:00-18:00 (09:00-11:00 EST).
In the second workshop, the companies will dive into how to present their pitch. A pitch is a great way to communicate an idea, how it works, why it counts, and who it benefits. And in the process of making it, participants will clarify the key elements of their idea and refine how they talk about them. A pitch is a primary way that they will present their idea, and they will be using it to convince different types of people—from other companies to potential city officials to rally to their cause.
Pitching Session: May (exact date TBC).
The participating companies will be able to present the co-creation solutions in front of a panel of judges including the city representatives. More to come on the date and time – as well as the venue setup for the final pitching session.
Deadline for applying to take part in the workshops is 9th April 2021. Register for the workshops HERE.

Event Details
About the program
The celebratory program is a unique opportunity for Danish companies within fashion and interior design to showcase products, engage the American design community, and develop sales channels.
Activities and program
The program will consist of three different types of activities. You can choose to only participate in the virtual activities, or you can participate in the entire program.
Exclusive workshops on American design
From the official Circular City Week Studio, we will host two virtual workshops – one focusing on circularity in fashion, the other interior design. The workshops will give an exclusive forum to discuss circularity trends with industry stakeholders in the US.
One-to-one meetings with American customers
As part of the program, we are offering all participating companies to tap into our combined network of fashion and interior design buyers, retailers, and costumers. Based on your company interest, we will facilitate virtual individual meetings between you and the American counterpart, to assist you in your sales and business development efforts.
Circular pop-up exhibitions in New York
As we are hoping the Covid-19 situation in New York City continues to allow retail spaces to remain open, we will organize two pop-up exhibitions in SoHo, Manhattan. Buyers, costumers and other stakeholders will be able to book time to exclusively visit these two pop-exhibitions, where you can physically showcase your flagship pieces. A product catalogue will be developed for both physical and online use.
Who should join?
The program mainly targets Danish SMV’s working within the field of fashion and interior design, who have created product and solutions based on circular economy principles. These include, but are not limited to, lifetime extension initiatives, circular material choices, take-back schemes, leasing or shared economy business models, upcycling practices and so on.
This program is designed to both assist companies that already have a strong presence in USA and companies looking to expand into the American marketplace. Those companies who are not established, will be offered workshops on how to enter the market, as well as insights into the opportunities and challenges which the market upholds.
Why join?
- To expand your visibility among central costumers and buyers
- Content specific workshops with highly relevant peers
- Networking and B2B meetings with potential collaborators, buyers or retailers

Event Details
As urbanisation continues to accelerate globally, the demand for cities and buildings that can enable better health and well-being for their inhabitants rises. Holistic, cross-sectoral partnerships and new technologies are needed to create buildings that enable people to thrive, both individually and as communities. Therefore, the new Creative Denmark white paper ‘Beyond Buildings’ illustrates frameworks for holistic project planning that goes beyond a single building and the use of smart technologies to address the question of how to create buildings and spaces in between buildings that can improve health and overall quality of life for the many and not only the few. When developing our cities, developing new buildings or reinventing existing ones, sustainability must be a mandatory principle, as we develop cities and homes for citizens. Citizens’ well-being and life-quality must be the starting point for all actions made as we transition towards a greener urban future.
As part of Archtober in NYC, Creative Denmark, Danish Cleantech Hub and State of Green, gather Danish and American public and private experts to celebrate the launch of the new ‘Beyond Buildings’ white paper and to discuss how we create future sustainable cities for citizens.

BuildingEnergy NYC
Now in its ninth year, BuildingEnergy NYC is a conference designed by and for practitioners in the fields of high-performance building and design, energy efficiency, and renewable energy. Danish Cleantech Hub have been part of creating the content for the conference for several years and 2020 is no different.
About the Webinar
Thursday, September 24th, Danish and American frontrunners will through a one hour session, exchange knowledge and experience on deep energy efficiency retrofits. To accelerate deep energy efficiency retrofits, cities need better collaboration and international knowledge exchange. Strict building codes, energy labeling, and an innovative retrofit industry have made Denmark a world leader in energy efficiency. The historic CLCPA and LL97 climate laws put NYS and NYC at the forefront of the building retrofit industry. During this session, Danish and American specialists will exchange ideas on how to leverage building retrofits and public-private partnerships to support economic development and innovation. Through a series of fireside chats and case study presentations, the speakers will discuss topics such as the differences between doing business in Denmark versus New York, how to overcome the barriers of retrofitting buildings, and strategies to maximize the performance and benefits while minimizing costs.

Climate Week NYC is run in association with the United Nations and the City of New York. It brings together national, state and regional government leaders, businesses and the broader climate sector to accelerate climate action. Last year, over 350 events took place throughout New York City as part of the official program, which brought together political announcements, business leadership events, and grassroots activity.
Danish Cleantech Hub events:
Every year since 2014, Danish Cleantech Hub have hosted our signature event as part of Climate Week NYC. In 2020 will be no different, even though the COVID-19 situation entails us rethinking formats a bit. Also in 2020 we will zoom in on a topic that we believe will shape the future of climate action. Til date more than 2.000 people have attended our Climate Week NYC activities.
