About the program
The celebratory program is a unique opportunity for Danish companies within fashion and interior design to showcase products, engage the American design community, and develop sales channels.
Hosted by the Confederation of Danish Industry, Danish Cleantech Hub, Lifestyle & Design Cluster, and the Consulate General of Denmark in New York, this program is targeted to help Danish SMV’s tap into this growing market demand and assist each attending company with positioning their respective products as innovative and trendsetting.
Activities and program
The program will consist of three different types of activities. You can choose to only participate in the virtual activities, or you can participate in the entire program.
Exclusive workshops on American design
From the official Circular City Week Studio, we will host two virtual workshops – one focusing on circularity in fashion, the other interior design. The workshops will give an exclusive forum to discuss circularity trends with industry stakeholders in the US.
One-to-one meetings with American customers
As part of the program, we are offering all participating companies to tap into our combined network of fashion and interior design buyers, retailers, and costumers. Based on your company interest, we will facilitate virtual individual meetings between you and the American counterpart, to assist you in your sales and business development efforts.
Circular pop-up exhibitions in New York
As we are hoping the Covid-19 situation in New York City continues to allow retail spaces to remain open, we will organize two pop-up exhibitions in SoHo, Manhattan. Buyers, costumers and other stakeholders will be able to book time to exclusively visit these two pop-exhibitions, where you can physically showcase your flagship pieces. A product catalogue will be developed for both physical and online use.
Who should join?
The program mainly targets Danish SMV’s working within the field of fashion and interior design, who have created product and solutions based on circular economy principles. These include, but are not limited to, lifetime extension initiatives, circular material choices, take-back schemes, leasing or shared economy business models, upcycling practices and so on.
This program is designed to both assist companies that already have a strong presence in USA and companies looking to expand into the American marketplace. Those companies who are not established, will be offered workshops on how to enter the market, as well as insights into the opportunities and challenges which the market upholds.
Why join?
- To expand your visibility among central costumers and buyers
- Content specific workshops with highly relevant peers
- Networking and B2B meetings with potential collaborators, buyers or retailers

The rapid development in NYC creates new market opportunities and the program is developed by Danish Cleantech Hub in New York and Gate 21, to give the Danish SMEs a flying start in accessing the US market. The program zooms in on a concrete local challenge and invites Danish SMEs to present innovative solutions, to how their products and/or services can solve the challenge and provides an opportunity to pitch their solution towards a panel of public and private purchasers.
The Challenge
The objective is to create this pocket of the Industrial Business Zone into a viable and vibrant neighborhood hub for the Long Island City community. Using light as a means of connectivity, 12th Street will be an “always on” neighborhood oasis with safety, function and enjoyment at its foundation. With strategic implementation of smart lighting systems, that bring people together, the Campus at 12th Street is primed to be an iconic destination for Long Island City and across the five boroughs. The challenge owners are Long Island City Partnerships, International Nighttime Design Initiative and VOREA.
Challenge respondents will propose two Living Lab themes within their pitch: a showcase for best practice public lighting – beyond the street pole-luminaire typical and to facilitate community-based placemaking research.

Event Details
As urbanisation continues to accelerate globally, the demand for cities and buildings that can enable better health and well-being for their inhabitants rises. Holistic, cross-sectoral partnerships and new technologies are needed to create buildings that enable people to thrive, both individually and as communities. Therefore, the new Creative Denmark white paper ‘Beyond Buildings’ illustrates frameworks for holistic project planning that goes beyond a single building and the use of smart technologies to address the question of how to create buildings and spaces in between buildings that can improve health and overall quality of life for the many and not only the few. When developing our cities, developing new buildings or reinventing existing ones, sustainability must be a mandatory principle, as we develop cities and homes for citizens. Citizens’ well-being and life-quality must be the starting point for all actions made as we transition towards a greener urban future.
As part of Archtober in NYC, Creative Denmark, Danish Cleantech Hub and State of Green, gather Danish and American public and private experts to celebrate the launch of the new ‘Beyond Buildings’ white paper and to discuss how we create future sustainable cities for citizens.

BuildingEnergy NYC
Now in its ninth year, BuildingEnergy NYC is a conference designed by and for practitioners in the fields of high-performance building and design, energy efficiency, and renewable energy. Danish Cleantech Hub have been part of creating the content for the conference for several years and 2020 is no different.
About the Webinar
Thursday, September 24th, Danish and American frontrunners will through a one hour session, exchange knowledge and experience on deep energy efficiency retrofits. To accelerate deep energy efficiency retrofits, cities need better collaboration and international knowledge exchange. Strict building codes, energy labeling, and an innovative retrofit industry have made Denmark a world leader in energy efficiency. The historic CLCPA and LL97 climate laws put NYS and NYC at the forefront of the building retrofit industry. During this session, Danish and American specialists will exchange ideas on how to leverage building retrofits and public-private partnerships to support economic development and innovation. Through a series of fireside chats and case study presentations, the speakers will discuss topics such as the differences between doing business in Denmark versus New York, how to overcome the barriers of retrofitting buildings, and strategies to maximize the performance and benefits while minimizing costs.

We invite you to an exciting morning event where six Danish pioneers take the stage and exemplify how their products are designed and optimized for a tighter inner circle and showcase how their circular business design moves from the sideline into the mainstream.
A new decade just started, and it is already predicted that circular economy will accelerate to a new level in 2020. Winning strategies for businesses have been proposed and circular business models have been optimized in the recent years. The next step is to mainstream circular business models and unlock the massive economic potential.
At its core, a successful circular business model starts with product design and with the aim to design out waste. On a solid inner circle follows business opportunities with room for innovation and growth. And yet, companies face roadblocks on the transformational path into mainstreaming circular economy. What are the key drivers we need to attack in 2020 to reach the next level of mainstreaming circular business models in New York versus Denmark?
Denmark is among the most efficient countries in the world when it comes to waste and resource management. The Danish waste management and resource sectors are experts at collecting and treating waste to minimize environmental impact and efficient reuse of materials.
Join us and meet six Danish companies pitching applied circularity followed by questions from a panel of American experts.

Join us in New York to launch these conversations and consider how academic and design practice must change to address these challenges. In this era of Climate Crisis, and from the vantage point of material health how do we design and build a healthier future? This symposium seeks to bring people together to imagine paths for architects and designers to create a new healthier future for everyone. Danish Cleantech Hub is a co-sponsor and will be exhibiting circular solutions at the event.

About the event: As architects and designers, we often design without considering the complex environmental implications of our important decisions. An unwillingness to understand the consequences of all of our actions is having a profound impact on the planet’s ecosystem and on human health. Design decisions affect the construction and manufacturing industries and have an adverse impact on the planet and on our health. We must do things differently. We need to identify viable alternatives to our current carbon-intensive construction products and practices.
We are the first generation to spend approximately 90% of our time indoors. Building materials, furniture, and products in places where people live, work and play dictate what we breathe, absorb, and ingest. Evidence shows that indoor air may be three to five times more contaminated than outdoor air and exposure is even more likely for those living in substandard housing. Risks increase for pregnant mothers, children, and seniors whose bodies are particularly vulnerable to the effects of toxic chemicals.

Market preparedness and establishment program: The offshore wind industry in the Northeast U.S. is developing rapidly. The first large scale wind farm is scheduled to be operational by 2021 and the states have committed to a combined target of close to 16GW of offshore wind power by 2035. A local supply chain must be developed to meet demands of local developers and state authorities. This constitutes an enormous market opportunity for Danish companies in the offshore wind supply chain, but also gives rise to the many questions of taking on a new market.
Why join the program: With the aim of enabling smarter, faster and informed entry and establishment for Danish companies, DI with support from the Danish Energy Agency has developed a tailored Market Preparedness and Establishment Program for companies interested in becoming part of the Northeast U.S. offshore wind supply chain. The intensive management program takes place in both Denmark and the U.S. Throughout the program, participating decision makers will firstly develop the full toolbox and knowledgebase needed to make informed decisions about market entry/expansion. Secondly, the program will equip participants to navigate their sector specific challenges and efficiently manage U.S. operations during a three day visit to the U.S.
Program content:
- Establishment Decisions and Contract Requests: Understand risks, resources and data needs throughout your U.S. establishment/expansion process to quickly and accurately respond to contract requests from U.S. offshore developers and partners
- Strategic Market Selection and Cost Drivers: Identify what drives competitiveness for your company in a new market based on a flexible data driven tool to map and analyze the differences and attractiveness of states such as NJ, MA and NY
- Legal Considerations, U.S. Subsidiary Establishment and Visa Issues: Provides indepth information on U.S. legal subsidiary setup, corporate tax considerations, import tariffs and how to relocate Danish staff to the U.S
- Customer Needs, Partners and Recruitment: All you need to know about specific offshore wind market issues, including partner selection, unionization and local developers’ contract practices and requirements
- Local Content and Investment Climate:Provides actionable insights into states’ investment incentive schemes and local content regulations.

Event Details
Across the world cities are trying to tackle the increasing health impacts from air pollution an urban heat island effect. Every year, New York City experiences an average of 450 heat-related emergency department visits, 150 heat-related hospital admissions, and 13 heatstroke deaths. The City also averages about 115 excess deaths from natural causes exacerbated by extreme heat annually. From an urban design perspective much can be done to mitigate and to adapt to climate change related health impacts—not least in terms of developing solutions that are co-beneficial and aesthetic at the same time.
During the summer of 2019, the City of New York teamed up with Access Cities, a global alliance for sustainable urban development, to organize an Open Innovation Call on Air Quality and Urban Heat Island Effect as a call to action.
Contestants were requested to propose solutions for a specific neighborhood in NYC with some of the highest rates of heat-related illness and mortality and known air quality vulnerability issues. This Archtober-affiliated event will highlight and celebrate the winner of the Open Innovation Call together with other innovative initiatives in New York, and internationally, which are tackling these challenges.
Program:
5.30 pm – Registration & Refreshments
6.10pm – Opening keynote: Urban Climate Change Research Network, Jeffrey Raven or Cynthia Rosenzweig,
6.20pm – Access Cities Open Innovation Call Track 2 Winner presentation of NYC site specific proposal
6.50 – Findings from ULI study: A Vision for a Greener, Healthier, Cooler Gowanus: Strategies to Mitigate Urban Heat Island Effect
7.15pm – Curated panel discussion
7.45pm – Call to action – Costa Constantinides, Council member 22nd District of the City of New York
7.55 pm – Exhibition by Access Cities Open Innovation Call Finalists & Reception

Green Buildings can help us to tackle climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, help create sustainable communities and drive economic growth. A whopping 39% of global emissions can be attributed to buildings and construction processes, and with the Paris agreement commitment to limit the temperature rise by 1.5 degrees, the transition to net-zero buildings is imperative.
At this event, we took a hard look at what is possible, who we can learn from, and how we can find new, transformative strategies together to meet this challenge. A panel of experts from different parts of the Buildings industry presented solutions, and a Dragon’s Den youth panel kept checks and balances, asked the critical questions and set the bar for action high, future proof and implementable.
Program:
3:00 – Registration and coffee
3:30 – Welcome/setting the scene
3:45 – Six short 5-minute pitches with feedback from youth panel for each pitch

Event Details
This informative symposium gathered Westchester County Executive George Latimer, other local leaders and industry experts from a discussion on the future of water reclamation in Westchester County. The day included panel discussions and expert presentations on relevant topics including the current state of the water infrastructure, opportunities to work together as a County to achieve cost savings and improved environmental outcomes, and exploration of the latest technologies and business opportunities related to water reclamation.
What? The Clean Water Westchester Symposium gathered industry experts and local leaders for a discussion on the future of water reclamation in Westchester based on public-private-partnership funding. With the attendance of decision makers such as George Latimer, Westchester executive, and Richard Thomas, Mayor Mount Vernon, this symposium indicated the importance of taking action to achieve cost savings and an improved water infrastructure in the County.
Why? Counties across the US are struggling to finance upgrades to their water infrastructure. Public-private-partnerships with the private sector taking on more and risk is key. The symposium was a unique platform for Kamstrup and DHI group to present their services to relevant stakeholders and how data-driven decision making is essential to improve waste water management, and water infrastructure in general.
