Clean energy is essential to advancing the green transition and tackling climate change.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates, that the world must see an unprecedented scale-up of clean energy investments—reaching USD 4.5 trillion annually by 2030—to maintain the 1.5°C target set in the Paris Agreement.

As global leaders convene at COP29 in a couple of days, clean energy is set to be a prominent focus, highlighting its role as a backbone in achieving sustainable energy systems. Through several events at Denmark Pavilion, key players from Denmark’s energy sectors are ready to emphasize Denmark’s commitment to accelerate renewable energy and clean technology innovation.

Clean energy expected to be key area at COP29

Driven by supportive policies and favourable economics, the world’s renewable power capacity is expected to surge over the rest of this decade. According to the International Energy Agency, global additions are on course to roughly equal the current total power capacity of China, the European Union, India and the United States combined. In this vein, clean energy will yet again feature as a major focus, with several key initiatives aimed at accelerating the global energy transition.

One of the top priorities is boosting energy storage capacity, with a target to increase it sixfold by 2030, which is crucial for supporting renewable energy deployment. This includes upgrading or adding 80 million kilometres of electric grids by 2040 to handle the growing demand for electricity from clean sources.

Additionally, COP29 will focus on expanding global clean hydrogen markets and advancing technological and financial support for clean energy in developing countries, as well as scaling up investments in climate finance.

These efforts are part of a broader push to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030, a target set at COP28 but still central to discussions at COP29.

Driving clean energy transition

Denmark travels to COP29 with a clear agenda to accelerate the integration of clean energy sources.

Having established itself as a key player in the development of clean energy sources, Denmark remains actively engaged in the ongoing clean energy transition. With a national target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70% by 2030, the country is working to further increase its reliance on renewable energy sources. In 2023, wind and solar energy accounted for 62% of Denmark’s electricity consumption, reflecting steady progress toward this goal.

These developments are part of Denmark’s broader strategy to build a sustainable energy infrastructure that supports both domestic and regional energy needs. By focusing on innovation and integration across the renewable energy value chain, Denmark contributes to Europe’s efforts to enhance energy security and reduce carbon emissions. As the 2030 target approaches, Denmark continues to support the transition to clean energy with a focus on long-term sustainability and cooperation.

Meet solution providers offering expertise across clean energy sources

The Danish business delegation at COP29 in Baku makes up an experienced group of public-private partners excelling in green energy transition. From experts and solution providers within wind energy, electrification, and digital services, to business organisations and public agencies driving the transition towards a greener society.

At the Denmark Pavilion, located in H8 Blue Zone, several events will highlight important topics and discussions on renewable and clean energy sources. On Friday 16. November, Ørsted will host an event on how to catalyse clean energy demand, which will be followed up by an event CBrain, which will focus on the use of AI for environmental permitting in green energy projects. And on Saturday 16. November, TOPSOE will follow up with a talk on how to kickstart power-to-X in developing countries, with a specific focus on financing future fuel production for global shipping.
