Green Jobs and Renewable Energy – Low Carbon, High Employment

Monday, 19 September

The Consulate General of Denmark in New York and partners are hosting the Citizen Sustainability Summit on September 19-21 at the High Line in New York, during the 77th Session of the UN General Assembly and Climate Week NYC.

To reach the global climate goals we need to ensure a just transition that supports the creation of jobs. According to the International Labor Organization, a 1.5C degree pathway could create a net gain of 18 million jobs by 2030 globally. For the past couple of years, the potential for job creation within the renewable energy sector has been significant, especially within the offshore wind industry. According to Rystand Energy, the demand for people working in the offshore wind industry will triple by the end of this decade, surging to 868,000 jobs globally as the installed offshore wind capacity is steadily increasing.

To fulfill the potential, there is a need for education and training strategies to create a skilled workforce and just transition. Further for retraining, and recertification workers in the fossil fuel sector, and for addressing the potential misalignments between job losses and gains during the energy transition.

Organisers

As part of the citizen sustainability summit, State of Green and the Danish Confederation of Industries, is hosting an event highlighting the potential of job creation in a decarbonized society with a focus on offshore wind, and what it takes to get there.
